Byron Center Township is a civil township of Kent County
with a population of 20,317 reported by the census of 2000. With that census the per square mile
population density computed to 480.1.
In the heart of West Michigan with easy access to US 131 and
M-6 giving it a great location to commute to several cities including Grand
Rapids (fourteen miles north) and Lansing.
When driving thru the Township one can see everything from farms to
industrial facilities. The township can
claim home to the mega food distributor Spartan Stores Inc.
Byron Center Township has become a mecca of sorts for
retirees with its’ impressive number of golf courses with moderately priced
condominium communities.
The attraction that likely draws the most interest in the
township is the Kent Rail Trail for bikers and walkers which run for fifteen
miles from John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids to the township. This is a trail very well maintained running
thru rural and urban communities.
While the large percentage of commercial use of the area
keeps residential tax rate at one of the lowest in the Grand Rapids area it
also provides and helps maintain the excellent schools the District is
rightfully proud of.
